Jakarta (ANTARA) – Ahmad Muzani, Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) of Indonesia, said on Friday that the unity of Indonesia’s people is a key to this country’s success, supported by abundant wealth.
“Indonesia is a shared home worth fighting for,” Muzani said in his opening address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) at Parliament Complex, Jakarta.
He said unity was essential for national progress, while divisions could deplete the nation’s energy through mutual suspicion and efforts to undermine one another.
Conversely, he said, strong national unity could transform differences into a source of energy and progress.
Indonesia will celebrate the 81st anniversary of its independence on Aug. 17.
Therefore, he said, those attending the joint session were not merely participating in a constitutional ceremony, but were reaffirming their commitment to the beloved Republic of Indonesia.
“We promise that the independence we inherited from the nation’s founders will continue to be protected. We promise that political differences will not divide our national brotherhood,” he said.
Muzani stressed that Indonesia was built by figures of great integrity. They were at times involved in heated debates over the foundations of the state, the form of government, the country’s territory, and the harmonious relationship between religion and the state.
Indonesia, he said, was not the result of one group defeating another, but of all groups agreeing to pursue a greater national ideal.
“It was from the greatness of these noble figures that the Republic of Indonesia was born,” Muzani said.
On Friday, the MPR, DPR, and DPD held the Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD.
The agenda included President Prabowo Subianto’s address on the performance of state institutions, as well as his State of the Nation Address commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence.
The annual session is a state ceremony held ahead of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day, under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
